Ever tried to remember something and noted that the harder you try,the less likely you can remember? You were experiencing what the famous hypnotherapist Emile Coue called the "Law of Reversed Effect."
Most likely what you were trying to recall suddenly popped into your mind later when you were more relaxed and not “trying” to remember. There’s a reason that occurs. We now know that certain brain states optimize your ability to learn and remember -- and especially to remember over time (long-term memory.)
Why Children Learn Easier Than Adults
Research proves that you commit information to long-term memory when you are relaxed, including during sleep. This is why it is a good strategy to sleep after an intense period of study. Relaxation causes memories to flow easily up into your conscious mind. This occurs because when you are relaxed, your brain focuses on alpha and lower beta brainwaves -– the optimum brain state for Super Learning.
While in this super-absorbent and focused state, memories are formed easier and committed faster to long-term memory. Expert learners have learned to focus their minds in this brain state. Children, on the other hand, memorize and learn easier than adults because their brains are naturally focused in these brainwave patterns.
The basic way to accelerate your ability to learn and remember is to train yourself to create such “high alpha, low beta” brain states. Several approaches can be used to achieve this, including: Listening to certain types of music, self-programming, attention to the nutritional needs of your brain, and brainwave training.
Music as a Learning Aid
When you listen to music your brain naturally tends to follow the beat of the music. That is why you may tap your foot to the rhythm.
Many studies have shown that listening to certain music creates very specific brain responses. When you listed to Baroque music averaging 60 beats per minute, for example, your brain begins to produce 60 beat-per-minute brainwaves. This plunks you straight into the alpha brain state -– an important component of Super Learning. And if you then add a brainwave overlay to the music (as in the Quantum Brain Gym), the effect is even stronger.
Memory Improvement with Self Programming
Many people view hypnosis as a stage trick, but it is actually one of the oldest forms of guided relaxation known to mankind. The true power of hypnosis is how it helps you access your subconscious mind. But many of the benefits of hypnosis can also be achieved using guided relaxation and self-programming (sometimes called auto-suggestion.)
One especially powerful form of self-programming is the use of subliminal suggestions. These can be flashed on your computer screen, or even embedded in relaxing music or sounds. The music relaxes your mind and opens access to your subconscious mind, while the subliminal messages implant desirable new ideas and personal affirmations directly into your subconscious mind.
Physical Brain Support
It is sometimes easy to forget that your mental abilities are an expression of the physical workings of your physical brain.
Your brain consumes a large amount of the oxygen supplied to your body. It also has a huge need for water. Dehydration can reduce y our ability to learn and remember as much as 50 per cent. In the case of a child, this may occur with a shortage of only one glass of water.
There are also some excellent neural accelerators available today, including the strongly-recommended BrainQuicken.
Brainwave Training for Super Learning
Leading scientist Dr. Siegfried Othmer has conducted several clinical studies of brainwave training and learning. He has reported increases in IQ as high as 33 points -- in addition to remarkable improvements in memory, reading and concentration skills.
Researcher Michael Taney, another brainwave expert, did a brainwave training study that yielded an average 10 point gain in IQ. And a study by leading brainwave provider Dr. Thomas Budzynski reported that brainwave training gave college students a substantial advantage. Students that received brainwave training saw their grades rise sharply, and continued to improve even after the brainwave sessions were completed.
